We’d been planning a trip to our local zoo for months. None of us had ever been there, so we were really excited to check it out. Despite our best efforts, DD would not take a nap before we went, so she was a bit tired and cranky as we got ready to go. But, we ended up having a great time (and great weather, which was a blessing after two days of rain).
I was shocked when I got home and found that I had taken 145 pictures! It sure didn’t seem like I had taken that many.
The first thing we saw were the giraffes. DH thinks DD was afraid of them because they are so tall. I don’t blame her! I didn’t get as close to them as DH did! You can buy crackers etc to feed the giraffes, but DH found some lettuce laying around and fed a few pieces to a couple of the giraffes. It’s amazing how they curl their long tongues around food!
This giraffe was separated from the rest of them. I heard a tour guide say he wasn’t in a time out, and then I didn’t hear the rest of what he said, but I think he said he did better on his own, then with the rest of the group. I didn’t get a close up picture, but he had all kinds of bumps on his head and DH thinks he was really old.
We were looking all around for the zebras as our map said they should have been near where we were. As I waited for the elevator to go up and see the monkeys, I peeked down over a railing and saw them. They seemed so small in comparison to the giraffes!
As soon as we saw the monkeys, DD perked right up!
This gorilla was clearly eating lettuce.
I know you can’t tell from the picture, but it appeared that this gorilla was eating poop. Picking it apart bit by bit as he put it in his mouth.
Did you see the gorilla in the background of the above picture, with a blue sweatshirt? I thought it was a blanket! So I told DD that monkeys carry blankets around with them too. Well, then I realized it was a sweatshirt. And then someone else pointed out that it said “Staff” on it. Eeeks! It was all in one piece. But in another cage, we saw some pieces of a similar sweatshirt and some shirts too. I guess they purposely put that stuff in there for them to play with???
Unfortunately, you couldn’t get very close to the elephants. They are kinda hard to see, but there are two in this picture.
There will be more to come in a second post.
