31 Days of Date Nights {Day 31} Getaway

Welcome to 31 Days of Date Nights. My plan is to give you a simple date night idea, (mostly frugal ones) every day for the month of October.   You can access all posts in this series here

I cannot believe we made it to the end of this series!  It seemed a bit daunting when I ventured off on this journey, but I’ve had a blast doing it and I hope you’ve enjoyed it as well.  Coming up with creative (and frugal) date night ideas has led me to incorporate some fresh ideas into our date nights, which both DH and I have enjoyed.

This last idea is certainly not one that I would consider frugal.  But, it’s one that we’ve done.  When I was pregnant with DD and we were in the midst of moving into our current home, we decided to plan a two night getaway.  The place we went was just minutes from our house, but it was nice to leave our responsibilities behind and enjoy one another’s company in a relaxed atmosphere.  We took advantage of a special deal the retreat center we went to was having in order to make this a bit more affordable.

Breakfast was included each morning and they had a common refrigerator which we used to store some snacks to tide my pregnant self over!

Here are some pictures from our getaway:

There is a castle on the grounds where we stayed.  It is more expensive to stay in the castle, so we stayed in another lodge.  Which, was probably for the best since we found out from another couple at breakfast that the castle was kinda noisy!

We walked around the grounds and saw this Eagle’s nest way up high.  (There was a sign pointing to it, we certainly didn’t find it on our own!)

Any guesses on what we saw next???

Yep, they had turkeys wandering all over the grounds!

Thanks again for joining me for this series! There were so many great topics being covered over the past 31 days (over 700 people joined in the fun!), I hope to read through more of them in the coming days. You can see all the topics here.

31 Days of Date Night Ideas {Day 30} Shop for others

Welcome to 31 Days of Date Nights. My plan is to give you a simple date night idea, (mostly frugal ones) every day for the month of October.   You can access all posts in this series here.

I know some of you don’t want to hear that Christmas is only 62 days away. But, it’s the truth.

If you’ve never filled an  Operation Christmas Child shoebox, it is a practical way to bring joy to a kid (or two, or three).

And it can be a lot of fun to go shopping with your mate to find fun and practical things to fill your shoebox with.

If you are into couponing like I am, you can raid your stash for things to include in your shoebox.  Free toothpaste, toothbrushes, stocking stuffer toys, anybody???    (I know I haven’t talked about couponing on this site yet, but I will in the near future.  Once this 31 Days series is over, I’ll start blogging on other interests that I have).

Go here to get more information on how to pack a shoebox.

31 Days of Date Nights {Day 29} Mad Libs

Welcome to 31 Days of Date Nights. My plan is to give you a simple date night idea, (mostly frugal ones) every day for the month of October.   You can access all posts in this series here.

This week, DH and I went to our old standby (Starbucks) for our date night.  We went back to the location that was being remodeled a while back.  They had removed a wall and moved some chairs/couches/tables around and added a giant table in the center.  DH thinks they replaced the chairs with less comfy ones!   And I for sure liked the old setup better.  More privacy.

I had printed out some Mad Libs from this site, and brought them along as a surprise for DH.

I have to be honest here.  I cannot recall all of the parts of speech.  But, DH knows them all (and English is his 3rd language!) so I had him fill in all the blanks for the first round in which the topic was “A Day at the Zoo” and here’s what he came up with:

Then, DH asked me the parts of speech and filled in the blanks for “Make Me a Video Game!”  with my answers.  When I got stumped as to what qualified for what part of speech, I looked at the Mad Libs DH had given answers to and that helped me come up with something fitting.  Here are the results of mine:

By the way, as we were reading through the end results of our Mad Libs, some of the sentences didn’t make sense. Now, I know the point is for them to turn out funny and not really make sense, but some of the tenses etc didn’t make sense. DH found a place or two where they asked for the wrong parts of speech. Oh my goodness, I married a smarty! 😉

31 Days of Date Nights {Day 28} Childhood Movie

Welcome to 31 Days of Date Nights. My plan is to give you a simple date night idea, (mostly frugal ones) every day for the month of October.   You can access all posts in this series here.

When we were  getting settled into our current home,  we came across a bunch of movie soundtracks that DH had from movies he had seen as a child.   One of the soundtracks was to the movie “The American Tail.”

An American Tail: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack

We had both seen the movie as kids.  But, we hadn’t seen it since.  I listened to the soundtrack, but only remembered the song “Somewhere Out There.”

I started looking on eBay for a used copy of the movie to surprise DH with.  He’s not big into gifts, but I thought this would for sure make his day.  I was able to get it for $2.50, including shipping.

We sat down and watched the movie together on one of our “stay at home” date nights.  We were surprised at how little either of us had actually remembered about the movie.

We also watched “The Little Mermaid”

which is one of my favorite Disney movies.  DH hadn’t ever seen that movie.  And, in fact, he said we most definitely would not be letting DD see the movie because it was all about rebelling from her dad!  lol!  I had never thought about it that way, but I see his point.

As I’ve mentioned, you can get movies from Redbox for super cheap, or free.  I’ve also been able to stream a few free movies from Amazon.com when they’ve had a special On Demand offer.

As to when/if DD gets to see “The Little Mermaid,” I’ll keep you posted.  So far she hasn’t seen any movies, but we’ll see what the future brings.

31 Days of Date Nights {Day 27} School programs

Welcome to 31 Days of Date Nights. My plan is to give you a simple date night idea, (mostly frugal ones) every day for the month of October.   You can access all posts in this series here.

Go to a program at your local school.  Even if you don’t have kids that go there.  Even better, if it’s at your old school, you can show your spouse around the historical site 😉

A few years back, my Mom and I went to my old elementary school to see a program the kids put on.  We did not know a single soul there.  I didn’t see any of my old teachers, the Principal, any neighbors etc.  But it was still a blast.  To be in my old school building in the gym and watching kids perform.

A lot of times you can find events like this for free, or, at the high school level, you might pay a small fee to see a play.  You can find out about events like these in your newspaper, neighborhood newsletter (we have a house in an HOA community so they have a newsletter), or on the magnetic sign outside a school near your house.

Several months ago, DD and I were out for a walk right by the elementary school near our house and found out that there was a square dancing program going on for family to attend.  The woman I spoke to was the Grandmother of a child that went to that school and she said they have all kinds of fun programs like that going on there.

31 Days of Date Nights {Day 26} Hiking

Welcome to 31 Days of Date Nights. My plan is to give you a simple date night idea, (mostly frugal ones) every day for the month of October.   You can access all posts in this series here.

Have I mentioned that we like to go on walks?  Oh, yeah, I think I have a few times.  Now, I prefer a walk over a hike any day.  But, DH loves to hike.  And we happen to live in an area with loads of hiking opportunities.

One of the best things about hiking is that it is free!  Some of the not so great things are that weather can ruin your plans for hiking and there is usually no indoor plumbing when it comes to hiking trails.

But, hiking can still be a fun date.  Bring your camera along to take pictures of the view.  You might come across some wildlife  or plants/flowers that you want to take a picture of.

From what I understand, men bond by doing activities side by side.  What a great way to bond with your husband.  Getting out into nature, walking side by side, taking in God’s beautiful creation and talking.

Maybe hiking isn’t so bad after all….

31 Days of Date Nights {Day 25} Coin toss walk

Welcome to 31 Days of Date Nights. My plan is to give you a simple date night idea, (mostly frugal ones) every day for the month of October.   You can access all posts in this series here.

I first read this idea on the  Women Living Well blog as this is an activity that Courtney, the author of the blog, does with her kids.  But, I figured, hey, this could work for a date night, too!

Basically, you head out for a walk with a coin.  Each time you come to an intersection, one of you flips the coin.  If it lands on heads, you turn right, and if it lands on tails, you turn left.

DH and I enjoy going on walks, but these days most of our walks include taking DD to the park!  We haven’t done this one yet as a date night, but I’m looking forward to seeing where it takes us!  We’ve been in our current neighborhood for about 2 years, but there is still plenty of exploring to do.
